Chicago Fire obtained their sixth road win his past weekend after defeating the Kansas Wizards 2-0 at the Community America Ballpark. The victory left the Fire in second place in the Eastern Conference and also marked the team’s second consecutive win. For Kansas, however, the game was a fifth consecutive loss, something of a disappointing debut for interim head coach Peter Vermes, who is looking to restructure the team.
The Fire entered the match with five wins and four draws in 11 road games; the Wizards entered hoping to erase the memory of an awful 6-0 loss against FC Dallas in early August. Despite two weeks of practice, however, the Wizards couldn’t handle the pressure, missing various offensive attempts and letting the Fire dictate the match. Chicago controlled possession of the ball from the beginning of the game, creating constant scoring opportunities. Nevertheless, Kansas gave an admirable effort,Cheap Tiffany, even with the absence of its two best scorers, Claudio Lopez and Davy Arnaud, and created several openings with the assistance of Josh Wolff and Roger Espinosa. Despite the Wizards’ efforts,Cheap Tiffany Key Ring HCG DROPS, however, Chicago opened the score at minute 13 when forward Chris Rolfe took advantage of Marco Pappa’s assist to shoot past Kansas City goalkeeper Kevin Hartman, putting the score 1-0. Chicago was able to maintain possession and nearly scored again 4 minutes later; however, Pappa was able to defend. Kansas tried to focus on retaliation despite being down in the score, creating several great plays late in the first half in minutes 28 and 36. Again a few minutes later, Espinosa kicked a dangerous shot towards the Fire’s field,You Say Anorak- I Say Ski Coat, but despite the struggle,Tiffany And Co Online, the first half ended 1-0 in favor of Chicago. In the second half, Vermes made several changes to strengthen Kansas’ midfield, changes that proved fortuitous: the Wizards enjoyed more possessions and had more chances on the goal. Kansas returned a stronger team in the second half, creating opportunities in the first minutes. The tempo quickly changed for both teams, however, at minute 85, when Kansas player Zoltan Hercegfalvi was dismissed with a straight red when he fouled Fire player Mike Banner. With Kansas sporting only 10 players on the field, Banner was able to score the first goal of his career only four minutes later, bringing the score to 2-0 in the closing minutes of the match. At the conclusion of the game, coach Vermes said that, despite his team’s loss, his club had improved in offense, although the players needed to work harder, take more chances, and raise their expectations for the next game. “We didn’t come in with too many high expectations for the first game. We have a lot to work on. I thought we were a little tentative, especially when we won the ball and then a couple times defensively where we should have stepped a little higher. We were giving them too much respect … they were establishing their lines very close to our goal,” Vermes said. Vermes had said previously that changing his team’s fortunes would require a great deal of time and effort. Kansas’ next meeting will be against San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday August 22nd , while the Chicago Fire will face Los Angeles Galaxy at home this Wednesday, August 19th. |
