His enthusiasm sinks even further when tramping through the jungle all day with minimal food and rest, and struggles to cope with intense heat and humidity. Not yet aware of the battles that are waiting for him, he again writes to his grandmother saying he wanted to continue the tradition of army service in his family, just like his grandfather did in World War I and his father in World War II. But in the jungles of Vietnam, nobody cares about the troops. They are anonymous, and most of them come from poor backgrounds. Chris quickly realizes the logic which prevails in this war. He shouldn't try to form a friendship with one of his comrades, because due to surprise guerilla attacks and the risk of sudden death from booby traps, either one of them could end up in a body bag the next day.
Giving the audience a grunts-eye view of the war, and looking closely at the men who suffered great physical and mental hardships air jordan 11 xi, the movie is set in 1967 and early '68. Charlie Sheen plays Chris Taylor, a young American who has just arrived in Vietnam to begin his tour of duty. He quickly finds out that his presence there is unnecessary, and to some degree, unwanted. He writes letters home to his grandmother, admitting he made a mistake by leaving college and volunteering for military service.
It isn't long before Chris finds himself in the middle of a much bigger conflict, the one raging within the platoon itself. When the group enters a small village, Sgt. Barnes goes berserk when he believes the locals are aiding enemy soldiers. He shoots one unarmed villager dead in front of the entire unit, and this causes a serious rift. Half the men side with Sgt. Elias, and the other half with Barnes.
That's exactly what happens after his first firefight. When his group is ambushed in the middle of the night by the Viet Cong, he is blamed for the death of one man and the injuries of another. The two men commanding the platoon are the reasonable and compassionate Sgt. Elias (Willem Dafoe) and the gruff, facially-scarred Sgt. Barnes (Tom Berenger).
Back at their base new jordans 2011, Chris says they should kill Barnes for what he's done. Overhearing their conversation, Barnes walks in and challenges anyone to take him down. It's easy to tell everybody hates him but they don't move, knowing he has escaped death more than once in Vietnam. Chris jumps up and struggles with him but is easily overpowered by Barnes, who cuts Chris under the eye with a small knife.
As they take off in a chopper, Elias emerges from the jungle, wounded but alive. He can't be rescued and is killed by advancing enemy troops. Chris sees this, and his worst fears are confirmed.
Sent into the jungle once again to fortify defensive positions, the young Chris no longer behaves like a rookie. He is close to a total meltdown and is almost killed by Barnes, who nearly caves Chris's head in with a shovel. Chris finally delivers his own justice and kills Barnes by shooting him in the chest, and since he's been wounded twice, he gets a ticket home. Flying over the jungle, his emotions pour out of him as he reflects on the destruction and the huge loss of life.
Elias wants Barnes to be punished for the illegal killing air jordan 11, and as the platoon goes deeper into the bush to fight the Viet Cong again, Barnes sees a chance to get rid of the one man who can guarantee a court-martial for war crimes. He shoots Elias three times in the chest, and leaves him for dead.
