| M. Kassoivtz’s use of Symbols and Setting
No[i]rse Th[i]some[/i] The movie title nike shox oz men, La Haine literally means hate, and it is hate in great abundance that Kassoivtz’s main characters encounter. The three boys recieve and spew hate with almost every step. Whether it is shouting insults, arguing with police, amongst each other, trashing late night parties or encounters with skinheads the boys are constantly in a violent and judgmental setting. M. Kassoivtz’s 1995 production La Haine, address the issues of poverty, racism and police brutality in the Paris suburbs. The boys walk around the suburbs, which look oddly like an urban desert (Simpson-French 1B, Lecuter Slides, University of Glasgow). All in all the black and white film is a chilling account of the boys’ lives. Ironically the three main characters could themselves not possibly be more diverse. Vinze is a white Jewish boy. Hubert is of Africa descent Shox NZ si shoes, and Said is an Arab of North African descent. The three argue amongst each other, but nonetheless enforce a sort of mini protective family circle around each other. At times through out La Haine it seems as though it is there three that offer the only glimmer of hope in the society. Most evident in the 1995 French Film is the gun. The actions of the three main characters, the police and those around them are governed by it. On the one hand the gun is a sort of hot potatoes nike shox for women, or a ticking bomb (Simpson). The gun is a symbol of the tension in the society. Yet, the gun is also symbolic of the boys’ friendship. While they may not directly demonstrate their love, they do so in their responses to the gun… All in all, La Haine is a movie everyone should go see. The use of documentary in the beginning is as eye opening if not more so than the movie itself. While not a soft and fuzzy movie, and perhaps Americanized (Vincendeau), it does cause the audience to think. And, despite the French films chilling ending the fact that three so different boys could be friends offers hope for the future. They are separated from the bright lights of Paris. Their world is one where children play in burnt vehicles and not playgrounds (Simpson). Even the black and white color scheme points to a dreary world without opportunities (Simpson). Kassoivtz is a pro at using the setting to enhance the movie and its effect. |
