The União de Vegetal,Air Jordan 12, also known as the UDV, claims origins as early as the 10th century BC, but its ritualized practices were established in 1961 by another rubber tapper named José Gabriel de Costa, who is known as Mestre Gabriel. Ayahuasca is called hoasca in the UDV and the ceremonies are conducted in method that are different from those of Santo Daime,Jordan AJF3, as there is less emphasis on song and dance, while introspection is the subject of stronger emphasis.
Ayahuasca, also called yagi and vegetal, is an acrid beverage brewed from the B. caapi vine, which is native to Brazil, Peru and other tropical regions. It contains dimethyltriptamine (DMT), a controlled substance in most countries,Jordan True Flight, as its active ingredient. It also contains MAO inhibiting harmala alkaloids which prevent the body from digesting the DMT, allowing it to reach the brain where it produces an altered state, characterized as visionary by some and hallucinogenic by others. While both Santo Daime and the UDV have spread throughout Brazil and to other countries, the third religion, the Barquinha (Little Boat) has remained confined to the region around Rio Branco in Acre state and is much smaller than the other two. It was founded by Daniel Pereira de Mattos, who is known to adherents as Frei (Friar) Daniel. Barquinha ceremonies, like those of Santo Daime, are conducted with ritualized hymns and dancing. The Three Popular Ayahuasca Religions of Brazil and Their Founders Both Santo Daime and the UDV have established churches outside of Brazil, and although many of these remain clandestine, legal rights have been granted in some countries in Europe, including Spain and the Netherlands, for adherents to consume ayahuasca as part of their religious practice. The UDV and Santo Daime Outside of Brazil The founder of Santo Daime was a rubber tapper from Maranhão. While working in Acre, Raimundo Irineu Serra, also known as Mestre Irineu, was introduced to ayahuasca. It is said that he experienced a series of visions in which he met the Virgin Mary, whom he also called the Queen of the Forest. He founded Santo Daime in the early 1930s as he was receiving a series of hymns that are sung in the ritualized sessions that are known as "works." Ayahuasca in this tradition is simply called "daime." Although ayahuasca was relatively unknown in Brazil as recently as thirty years ago, the seeds for an explosion in interest this psychotropic tea (see Bellos) had already been sown. Twenty years earlier,Jordan Pro Classic Shoes, the third of the country's three religions that use ayahuasca as their central sacrament was established. These three religions are commonly known as Santo Daime, the União de Vegetal and the Barquinha, and of these, the first to be established was Santo Daime.
