“A Lot of Untapped Talent”
Art Show a Confidence Builder for Artists With Mental Illnesses Read on Sheramy Bundrick's Historical Fiction Sunflowers Vincent Van Gogh “It may be therapeutic Coach Crossbody Bag,” Baigent said. The show, which coincides with Mental Illness Awareness Week, generally attracts about 100 spectators. This year there were about 18 artists and around 50 pieces on display. Some pieces also sell to spectators each year. Pat Baigent is a team leader with the Woodstock-based Oxford County branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association and sits on the branch’s art committee, which is made up of clients and staff of the branch. In an Oct. 7, 2010 interview, she could not say whether the branch’s annual Art Sake show – which was in its fifth year in October – shows a link between mental illness and creativity. However, she said, it does allow people with mental illnesses to build their confidence through showing their art. “There’s a lot of untapped talent,” Walsh said in an Oct. 6, 2010 interview about the work displayed at the show. “It amazes me. There’s always something different.” It’s a widespread belief that mental illness is linked to creativity. However, an organizer of one Woodstock, Ontario-based art show featuring works by people with mental illnesses said she cannot confirm that belief. Rather, for her, the show’s focus is on the art rather than the illnesses. |
