Maori are the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand, who arrived in waka hourua (voyaging canoes) around 1280. The first settlers brought with them food they could grow and harvest: the kumara (sweet potato); yams; taro and gourds. Early Maori lived by burning the forest to establish kumara plantations. They also caught birds and fish, collected shellfish from the shore and gathered fern and other roots.
