Murphy Awarded the Medal of Honor
The best-selling book was entitled To Hell and Back and was later made into a movie that, according to Internet Movie Database (Imdb) "was a huge hit, setting a box-office record for Universal that wasn't broken for 20 years." Ken Ringle in June 1971 wrote a Washington Post article, "Audie Murphy buried with Military Rites at Arlington," in which he describes Murphy's movies as "forgettable low-budget westerns." Audie Murphy is well known for movie roles as a cowboy, lawman,Jordan Retro 7, and gunslinger. He often starred in classic movie westerns that preceded the era of the "anti-hero" westerns. An Audie Murphy DVD collection of classic westerns provides a good example of the development of the genre as it transitioned from classic western to modern western. In the movie, The Texican, Murphy actually dabbled in the western genre known as "the spaghetti western," but he did not adapt to the new style. Murphy, however, starred in a movie adaptation of his life entitled To Hell and Back that provided glimpses of the military career that preceded his acting career. Despite the possibility of the burning tank exploding, Murphy manned a 50 caliber machine gun mounted atop the vehicle and continued to engage the enemy. "He was alone and exposed to German fire from 3 sides, but his deadly fire killed dozens of Germans and caused their infantry attack to waver. The enemy tanks, losing infantry support, began to fall back. For an hour the Germans tried every available weapon to eliminate 2d Lt. Murphy" states the citation. Murphy killed an entire squad that tried to sneak behind him on the right, and he continued his one-man battle until running out of ammunition. He had received a leg wound but, ignoring the injury and refusing medical treatment, he returned to his unit and organized a counterattack. Murphy's actions resulted in defeat of the German military unit; their objective had been the woods that Murphy defended. He also prevented the enemy from encircling his troops,Jordan 12, saving the lives of members of his unit. Most Decorated Soldier in World War II However, others describe Murphy as a movie legend. The exploit that led to Murphy being awarded the American military's highest medal for valor,Air Jordan 1, the Medal of Honor, is as compelling as any movie plot. His unit "was attacked by 6 tanks and waves of infantry" on January 25, 1945 according to the Medal of Honor Citation for Murphy, Murphy ordered his unit to retreat and set up positions in the woods while he remained in position providing directions for artillery strikes that devastated the enemy. As the enemy moved closer to Murphy's position, he climbed inside of a burning tank that had been abandoned by its crew after it receiving a direct enemy hit. The Smithsonian Institution website, Price of Freedom Americans at War,Air Jordan 11, explains that "By the end of World War II, Audie Murphy's exploits had earned him every medal his country could give.
