Neverwhere is a favorite of book clubs because its richly created underworld, that lies just outside of "normal" rules of reality, is full of perilous adventure, enchanting creatures,

Comic book mastermind Neil Gaiman is considered one of the most creative writers of modern times. His first novel, Neverwhere (Harper Perennial, 2003) showcases his creative genius in this darkly hypnotic novel set in he subterranean world of monsters, saints, angels and murderers under the city of London.

Together with the girl he helped on the sidewalk (whose name, oddly, is Door) Richard begins a bizarre and terrifying quest to find the evil entity who killed Door's family. On their journey they encounter assassins, navigate labyrinths, and stumble upon mythical beasts.
Filled with historic and literary allusions in a world that believably defies logic, Neverwhere is a suspenseful story in a world where time is juxtaposed and anything, from any world, can happen.

The prologue offers several instances of ominous foreshadowing. First, Richard's friends give him an umbrella with a map of the London Underground on it. Next, an old woman warns him to watch out for the doors, as London can be a dangerous place. How does this use of foreshadowing set the tone for the novel? Did you make the connection between the girl, Door,

, and the old woman's warning? What do you think about the social code in London Below? Discuss the class systems, social order, and family and community structures of London Below. How do they compare to London Above? How well does Richard understand the social code of London Below? How do you feel when you see him put himself in jeopardy (due to his ignorance) again and again? In London Below, money is not used as currency. Everything operates on a favor or barter system. What are the advantages or disadvantages of this system?Door, and her companions, are never sure whom they can trust. Do you think men and women in the novel are equally untrustworthy? What do you think about gender roles in London Below as opposed to London Above?Richard Mayhew begins his journey as a rather boring, ordinary businessman. Discuss his transformation. When does it start? What is the catalyst of the change? Is Richard forced into the metamorphosis or does he willingly let go of his old self? Why do you think the transformation and to happen this way?Neil Gaiman uses interesting names in this novel (Door, Islington, Mr. Croup, Marquis de Carabas, etc.). What is the significance of these names? Did you recognize the literary or historical origins of some of the names? Did the names help you to visualize the characters? If so, how?
Richard Mayhew is an unassuming young London-based businessman who stops to help a girl who is bleeding on the sidewalk. This one act of kindness is the talisman which erases him completely from the life he knows (his bank cards no longer work, his apartment is rented to strangers, and he has become completely invisible) and catapults him into London Below, a world of shadows and darkness in the subterranean labyrinth of sewer canals and abandoned subways.
