The last two albums <span style="font-style: italic">Systematic Chaos </span>and <span style="font-style: italic">Black Clouds and Silver Linings, </span>have lost much of the content depth that their earlier work has (with a possible exception of <span style="font-style: italic">In the Presence of Enemies</span> and <span style="font-style: italic">The Best of Times</span> &ndash; the latter of which is dedicated to the memory of Portnoy&rsquo;s father), as the songs were surrounding demons and monsters (an unnecessary dive into power metal territory) and Hitchcock style thriller mysteries. <br />The last album&rsquo;s musical approach was especially disappointing, as many of the themes and ideas seemed to be recycled from earlier material. <span style="font-style: italic">The Shattered Fortress </span>was to be the ending installment to a series of songs (the <span style="font-style: italic">Twelve-Step Suite</span>), spanning from the <span style="font-style: italic">Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence </span>record in 2002, that mimics the twelve steps alcoholic rehabilitation program that Portnoy went through. The last song in the suite just featured reprisals of the earlier songs in the saga, with very little original material (except maybe the last two minutes). The drummer and frontman of the five-man group, Mike Portnoy, has announced on the 8th of September, 2010, that after 25 years he is leaving the band.
