Krzysztof Kieslowski (1941-1996) is regarded as one of the cinematic masters of European film

A Short Film About Love (Krotki Film O Milosci, 1988)
Love and voyeurism become intermingled and confused in an unconventional love affair between a 19-year-old peeping tom and the object of his affections. This extended version of the sixth episode of The Decalogue takes on feature-length proportions as it gently and sublimely explores themes of love

A Short Film About Killing (Krotki Film O Zabijaniu, 1988)
A graduate of the influential Lodz Film School, Kieslowski transcended artistic barriers by producing films like Camera Buff and No End which boldly questioned the political reality of his day. He became part of a loose movement of Polish film makers - among them Andrzej Wajda

, Janusz Kijowski and Agnieszka Holland - known as the Cinema of Moral Anxiety. Meanwhile, confrontational films like A Short Film About Killing and A Short Film About Love explored themes of morality and love in the context of life in Communist-era Poland.
Kieslowski's fascination with the depth and scope of human emotion characterises his more well known films like The Decalogue and Three Colours film cycles. During an interview with the Oxford University Student Newspaper in 1995, Kieslowski said: "If there is anything worthwhile doing for the sake of culture, then it is touching on subject matters and situations which link people, and not those that divide people. If culture is capable of anything, then it is finding that which unites us all. We all fear the same way and the same things. And we all love in the same way. That's why I tell about these things, because in all other things I immediately find division."

Film Review - Lars von Trier's Antichrist
Visceral and challenging, A Short Film About Killing follows the story of a troubled young man who brutally kills a taxi driver on the outskirts of Warsaw. With its protagonist seen as a psychology case rather than a motive-less murderer, the film explores whether capital punishment equals justice. In doing so it won several prestigious awards, including prizes at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival and the European Film Awards.
Despite being subject to much re-editing and censorship, Camera Buff went on to win the grand prize at the Moscow International Film Festival. The film is a notable example of Kieslowski's socialist realist style, which undertakes to expose life under an oppressive political system with minimum commentary. The main subject is the protagonist, a simple but honest amateur film maker, who unwittingly turns his camera on corruption within the factory where he works and is persecuted as a result.
Ten short films exploring the Ten Commandments unearth sin in the lives of ordinary Warsovites who find their sense of morality challenged in different ways. Originally filmed as a television series for Polish television, The Decalogue became Kieslowski's most acclaimed work, attracting praise from renowned critics such as Roger Ebert, Robert Fulford and Dan Scheider.
