The battle of the Chosin Reservoir is perhaps one of the most impressive fighting withdrawals in military history. A United Nations’ force of nearly 30,000 men withdrew, under continuous attack, from Communist Chinese forces which had crossed the Yalu River. Conservative estimates place the Chinese forces at some 150,000 to 200,000 troops. The withdrawal took place in the middle of one of the coldest North Korean winters on record, with temperatures as low as 30 degrees below Fahrenheit.
The fighting took place from November 26th, 1950, to December 11th,

, 1950. The United Nations task force consisted primarily of United States Marines, and it moved down the Main Supply Route to the Sea of Japan,

, some 78 miles. By the end of this fighting withdrawal, the United Nations task force had suffered more than 50 percent casualties. Of these casualties, the United States Marine Corps suffered the lion’s share: over 800 men killed in action with another 12,000 injured. Those injured suffered predominantly from cold weather wounds,

, such as frostbite, and frozen extremities.
The initial fighting at the Chosin Reservoir, and the eventual withdrawal, would have gone smoother had the general staff of Tenth Corps, under the command of General Edward Almond,

, maintained proper communications between the various elements of the United Nations task force. The communication failure was not only between the various Republic of Korea military elements, the men of the 41 (Independent) Commando of the Royal Marine Commandos of the United Kingdom, but also between the different United States’ units as well.

All of these communications were possible with the right equipment, but more often than not that equipment was not available to the units engaged in the fighting. Requests for armor, artillery, air, and naval fire often had to be done through a circuitous route which delayed response time, and cost lives.
This was not so in the beginning of the Korean War, and it was painfully evident at the battle of the Chosin Reservoir. The radio equipment issued to the United States Marines, the US Army, as well as the Republic of Korean forces and the Royal Marines (for both of the other units had also been equipped by the US Army), was substandard. Many of the radios were rebuilt, secondary pieces from the Second World War. The pieces also broke down due to the extreme cold at the reservoir, and battery life was cut by more than half. Spare batteries were not issued, and in some instances radios arrived that had no batteries.

Regardless of the poor performance of the radios themselves, however, was the inability of the general staff to ensure that the different units could: one, communicate with one another, i.e. USMC units could talk to US Army or ROK or British Marines and vice versus; two, that any of the infantry units could communicate with armor; three, that infantry units could coordinate covering fire with air power; four, that infantry units could call effectively for artillery support; and, finally, that the infantry units could coordinate easily with naval gunfire.
As they had been for decades, the United States military was a modern army, moving into battle with the most technological weapons and equipment available to them. In the Second World War the American military had gone into battle with the finest radio systems, enabling diverse units to contact not only one another, but supporting arms such as artillery and air power as well.
