The first settlers brought with them food they could grow and harvest: the kumara (sweet potato); yams; taro and gourds. Early Maori lived by burning the forest to establish kumara plantations. They also caught birds and fish, collected shellfish from the shore and gathered fern and other roots. <br />The small coastal town of Riverton, in Southland, was once an important base for sealers and whalers and during the late 1800s boasted a population of about 500 Chinese, who mined for gold. Today it is a popular seaside destination on the Southern Scenic Route,<a href="http://www.airmaxs.net/nike_air_max_2003" target="_blank">Nike Air Max 2003</a>, which links several coastal highways and takes in some of the country's most spectacular and unique scenery. <br />White-skinned people in New Zealand are referred to by the Maori word 'Pakeha'. The first Pakeha people to make contact with Maori were explorers: the Dutch navigator Abel Tasman in 1642,<a href="http://www.airmaxs.net/nike_air_max_2003" target="_blank">Air Max 2003</a>, followed a century later by British explorer Captain James Cook. In 1769 Captain Cook claimed New Zealand for Britain. A short movie is played on a large screen to explain how Maori arrived in the area and what happened when European settlers landed. <br />New Zealand Maori <br />There are displays of New Zealand greenstone,<a href="http://www.airmaxs.net/nike_air_max_2010" target="_blank">Nike Air Max 2010</a>, Maori tools and information about the harvest of titi (muttonbirds), a tradition that continues today. Visitors to Te Hikoi can step inside a replica early settler hut and read about how they carved out a living, first as sealers then as whalers.
