Post subject: Jordan 22 Celebrating Rama Navami The Birth of the
In private,
Jordan 22
, the celebrations are necessarily on a smaller scale. Family and friends get together to sing bhajans in praise of the infant Rama. One of the most popular ones is the hymn from the Ramcharita Manas ‘Bhay Pragat Kripala’, which translates as ‘Then God appeared’.
Another extremely popular bhajan is ‘Thumak Chalat Ramchandra’. The bhajan describes in a lyrical manner the infant Rama learning how to walk. He stumbles and falls and his mothers pick him up and hug him.
Celebration of Rama Navami
Dasharatha was the king of Ayodhya descended from the sun. He had three wives, Kaushalya,

Tulsidas Describes the Birth of Rama
The Story of Rama's Birth
The birthday of Rama falls on the ninth day (Navami) of the Shukla Paksha of the Hindu month of Chaitra. Rama is the seventh avatar or incarnation of Vishnu. The main purpose of his birth was the slaying of the evil demon king Ravan and of the establishment of a just kingdom on earth. This utopia is referred to as Rama Rajya in Hindu scriptures.
In many places, the religious rituals begin nine days before, from the first day of the Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Chaitra. An important activity is the continuous reciting of the Ramcharita Manas, the version of the Ramayana written by Tulsidas. This scripture is considered to be among the holiest of Hindu religious works, though it was written fewer than 500 years ago.
Ramcharita Manas and Rama Bhajans
In the Ramcharita Manas, it is written that God should be worshiped by showering him with love in the way one showers love on ones children. Therefore,

, the celebration of Rama Navami as Rama’s birthday is accompanied by the adoration of the infant Rama. Temples are decorated and the idols of the infant Rama are brought to the forefront. Prayers are recited and bhajans are sung. The festivities reach a crescendo at noon because it is believed that Rama was born then. At noon special aarti is organized and prasad is distributed after that.
In South India, Rama Navami is also celebrated at the marriage anniversary of Rama and his consort Sita. The celebration is known as Sita Rama Kalyanam. A ceremonial wedding celebration of the celestial couple is arranged in many temples. The important centers for the celebration of Rama Navami are Ayodhya, the birth place of Rama, Bhadrachalam, the place where Rama and Sita lived during their exile, and Rameshwaram, the place from where Rama crossed over to the island of Lanka.
All three queens conceived and on the Navami of the Shukla Paksha of Chaitra at noon Rama was born to Kaushalya, followed by Bharat to Kaikeyi and Lakshman and Shatrughna to Sumitra. All four brothers considered each of the queens as mothers and never differentiated between them. And this is one of the lessons to be learnt fro
Kaushalya was his first wife and his official consort and so had to be given the kheer. But Kaikeyi was his favorite and she could not be left out. So Dasharatha gave half the kheer to Kaushalya and half to Kaikeyi. The two queens wanted to include Sumitra in the ritual so each gave half her share to Sumitra.
