His farewell sermon at Boston Common drew an estimated crowd of 23,000; that was more than the population of Boston at the time. This Boston tour was the start of his preaching tour of New England, that some historians consider to be the most sensational event in American religious history. Whitefield would address crowds of 8000 every day for a month. This great itinerant would preach would preach 175 sermons over a period of 75 days while traveling 800 miles. In Middletown, CT, Whitefield addressed a crowd of four thousand. A local farmer, Nathan Cole, recorded the event in his diary. Scholars find in his account a perfect description of the popular enthusiasm and frenzy that accompanied a Whitefield sermon. On October 23, 1740, he writes that he saw: <br />His voice was loud and clear. He had the ability to articulate his words and sentences so perfectly that he could be heard and understood at a great distance. This is what allowed him to preach to crowds of up to 30,000. <br />Whitefield Comes to America <br />Probably the best known Protestant in the whole world during the eighteenth century <a href="http://www.seekicks.com/puma-first-round-25/" target="_blank">puma first round</a>, George Whitefield was born on December 16, 1714 in Gloucester, England-son of an innkeeper, the youngest of seven children. In 1736, he was ordained a deacon in the Church of England and later a priest. He was colleagues with John and Charles Wesley, whom he had befriended while at Pembroke College and had joined the brothers' "Holiness Club" at Oxford. By age 26 <a href="http://www.seekicks.com/puma-ferrari-134/" target="_blank">puma ferrari</a>, Whitefield had become the most sensational and controversial preacher in the whole London metropolis. Whitefield secularized preaching. He preached on other days than Sundays and he took preaching outdoors which was unheard of. His sermons were simple but dramatic. Whitefield would act out Bible stories and was famous for acting out being born again. Due to his traveling, he would preach the same sermon several times. He would also preach without notes. Whitefield's style was also direct. He never spoke down to his audience, but instead spoke to their hearts and sentiments, casting the gospel in the language of the common man. By doing so, he won the hearts of Americans. Whitefield is also remembered as one of the first to preach to the enslaved. <br />In Philadelphia, a crowd of 8000 came to hear him including Whitefield's most famous friend who was none other than the professed atheist Benjamin Franklin. Franklin wrote that the only time he emptied his pockets into the offering plate was during Whitefield's preaching. Franklin reprinted his sermons in the Pennsylvania Gazette and boasted that his friend Whitefield prayed for his soul. <br />Whitefield had first come to America in 1738, in connection with an orphanage in Georgia. But in November 1739, he was coming to make the first of seven preaching tours of the colonies. He preached every day for several months to large crowds of sometimes several thousand. He was an absolute sensation. Colossal crowds followed him everywhere.
