Needlepoint Canvas Mesh Sizes
What is Needlepoint Canvas
Single thread needlepoint canvas does best when the tent stitch (also called the half-cross stitch) is used as it covers the back of the canvas with long slanting stitches which adds firmness. Because stitches seem to blend together [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it’s easy to depict shading. It’s also the best type of canvas for stitching geometric patterns and drawn designs. Mono canvases are available in sizes 10 to 22 holes per inch, with 18-count being the most popular. Stretchers frames are needed for keeping stitches in shapes while stitching.
The three main types of needlepoint canvases are single thread (mono) [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], double thread (Penelope) and interlock (leno) canvas.
A canvas’ mesh is the number of horizontal and vertical threads per inch, as well as the number of thread intersections for each inch. The larger the number of the mesh, the larger the mesh is. Typically, most needlepoint canvases range from size 10 (for a gros point design) to size 18. However, some canvases can have as many as 56 threads per inch or even higher. While some needlepoint canvases can have a mesh size as large as 10, others can have as many as 56 threads per inch for extremely fine petite point designs.
The double thread needlepoint canvas has double warps woven in alternate rows. This type of canvas allows for fine stitches such as petit point done over single mesh, in addition to large stitches over double threads. It’s a strong canvas that takes considerable wear, so it’s ideal for upholstery and rug projects.
Needlepoint canvas is an evenweave fabric in which both the warp and weft threads are equal sizes. This type of fabric is also used in crosstitch. The terms warp and weft are technical words for the threads used for creating finished woven products. While the warp is a fabric’s vertical thread, the weft is the horizontal thread that’s woven between warp threads for creating patterns.
