Researchers are still trying to define the mechanism behind why breastfeeding confers a protection against obesity. Breastfeeding has long been touted as the best form of nourishment for babies. However, since the advent of infant formula, breastfeeding rates have been on the decline. A new research published in the May 2010 issue of the journal Pediatrics demonstrates just how beneficial breastfeeding could be.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the well documented benefits of breastfeeding extend to both mother and infant. For moms, breastfeeding helps decrease risks of breast and ovarian cancer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and type 2 diabetes. It also allows the uterus to return to its normal shape more rapidly as well as stopping post-birth bleeding.

These costs were compared to the projected costs if 80 percent and 90 percent of U.S. families complied with the recommendations of exclusively breastfeeding for six months. Researchers found that if 90 percent of mothers exclusively breastfed for six months, the U.S. would save $13 billion per year and prevent about 911 deaths ($10.5 billion and 741deaths at 80 percent compliance).

In the study, researchers analyzed and compiled current indirect and direct costs of all pediatric diseases for which the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reported risk ratios that favored breastfeeding: ear infection, atopic dermatitis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sudden infant death syndrome, childhood asthma, childhood leukemia, type I diabetes and childhood obesity. Type 2 diabetes was not included in the analysis due to lack of data.

Another possibility relates to blood insulin levels. Researchers have observed that infants fed formula have higher levels of insulin and a more prolonged insulin response compared to breastfed infants. Higher insulin concentrations lead to more deposition of fat tissue, which can cause weight gain,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], obesity, and risk of type 2 diabetes.
Breastfeeding-Related Cost Savings: Study Results
For baby, breastfeeding helps lower the risk for all the different conditions mentioned above. Research is also looking into a connection with reducing incidence of allergies and celiac disease. One potential benefit is getting quite a bit of attention lately: reducing risks of childhood obesity.
