Saturn’s rings, however, are much more prominent and extend for 170,000 miles. This is about 2.25 times Saturn’s diameter, and 70 per cent of the distance from Earth to the moon. Despite this extent, though, Saturn’s rings are less than one-half mile thick.

If the thickness of Saturn's rings was scaled down to equal the thickness of a dollar bill, then 58 dollar bills could be lined up end-to-end (totaling 30 feet) to get the equivalent span of Saturn’s rings. Taking this analogy one step further, if a hockey rink’s center circle (with a convenient diameter of 30 feet) was covered with the dollar bills, the entire circle would equal the span of the rings and the dollars the thickness.
