MLB Welcome to The Bronx Yankees Pick Up Lance Ber |
|
Manchester United was formed in 1878 by the Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath as Newton Heath LYR Football Club. The team initially played games against other departments and rail companies, but by 1888 the club had become a founding member of The Combination, a regional football league. However, following the league dissolution after just one season, Newton Heath joined the newly formed Football Alliance, which ran for three seasons before being merged with the Football League. This resulted in the club starting the 1892 to 93 season in the First Division, by which time it had become independent of the rail company and dropped the LYR from its name. After just two seasons,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the club was relegated to the Second Division. The Yankees completed their deal with the Houston Astros for Lance Berkman. Mark Melancon and Jimmy Paredes were the Yankee chips moved to Houston in the Trade Deadline move.
Berkman will be with the team in 2010 and has an option for 2011. The Yankees will definitely take advantage of the valuable time he is with the team, especially since the Astros will be picking up some of the money involved.
The Yankees successfully were able to make a big deal without losing top prospects like Jesus Montero or Austin Romine in the process. Melancon was a prospect that many were ready to say good bye to after he had a minor flop on the big stage.
This article was also featured on Bombers Banter. Newton Heath initially played on a field on North Road, close to the railway yard. the original capacity was about 12,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but club officials deemed the facilities inadequate for a club hoping to join The Football League. Some expansion took place in 1887,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and in 1891 Newton Heath used its minimal financial reserves to purchase two grandstands, each able to hold 1,000 spectators. Although attendances were not recorded for many of the earliest matches at North Road, the highest documented attendance was approximately 15,000 for a First Division match against Sunderland on 4 March 1893. A similar attendance was also recorded for a friendly match against Gorton Villa on fifth September 1889.
UPDATE: Lance Berkman will wear No. 17 for the New York Yankees. Kearns will wear No. 26. Get Your Berkman jerseys while they are hot.
But that was not the only move that the New York Yankees made this weekend. Late Friday night, a deal was made with the Cleveland Indians that sent Austin Kearns on the next flight to Tampa to join the Yankees. The player involved on the Yankees side of the Kearns deal has not been announced just yet.
The 34-year old Yankees designated hitter did not play against the Brewers last night with the Astros, as the final touches were being put on the deal.
The final touch was for Lance Berkman to waive his no trade-clause to join the Yankees. In fact he did, and now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he's making the move from Texas to the Big Apple.
The newest Yankees will definitely provide a spark to an already potent Yankees offense. Berkman will serve as the Yankees designated hitter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while Kearns will provide some pop off the bench.
Kearns was pulled from the game in Cleveland.
Yankees like Mark Teixeira and manager Joe Girardi expressed how excited they were to have these two great players join them in New York.
On behalf of the Bleacher Report community and Yankee fans around the world,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Welcome to the Bronx, Lance and Austin."
