A densely atmospheric and psychedelic yet gospel and jazz-steeped magnum opus that takes a deeply personal subject matter (Jason Pierce's devastating heartbreak in the wake of his breakup with Kate Radley, the band's then-keyboard player) and turns it into something completely universal and easy to relate to. Something classic, timeless, and endlessly beautiful and hypnotic..
And so, while there is much emotional darkness to be found on Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space, it would be criminal to simply label it as a break-up album or something one should throw on when feeling down or depressed, as it is in fact quite a beautiful work of art, and music and lyrics. Something that can be appreciated by anyone at anyt
Jason "J. Spaceman" Pierce has, in the '80s with his exceptional space-rock outfit Spaceman 3 and with current act Spiritualized, shown a definite tendency towards voyaging into (and taking the listener along for the ride) the far-out reaches of space on a sonic, mental, and emotional level. But never has the journey been as deep, as treacherous, or as satisfying, as on 1997's masterful Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space.
A less-is-more approach that totally pays off in that no moment comes off as whiny or phony. Case in point: the immensely affecting and confessional words at the center of "Broken Heart", some of which include "And I'm wasted all the time, I've got to drink you right off of my mind, I've been told that this will heal [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], given time, but I have a broken I'm crying all the time, I have to keep it covered up with a smile, and I'll keep on moving on for awhile, but I have a broken Pierce vents feelings of uncertainty, as in the call-and-response exchanges, like "Think I'm a fool for you babe [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], probably just yearning, think I can rock and roll [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], probably just twisting" found in ample supply on the mesmerizing and trancy "I Think I'm In Love", and basks in a comforting narcotic haze on "Electricity", evidenced in musings such as "I said electricity, let it rain all over me, let the light be forever green".
"Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space"
A shimmering sort of beauty which, while certainly present upon first listen, reveals a bit more of itself with each spin, and just as much on the wildly chaotic (and that's an understatement) rockers like "Come Together" and "Electricity" as on the sweeping and symphonic numbers, like opener "Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space", the winding "Stay With Me", and the absolutely heartbreaking "Broken Heart".
The sort of beauty that comes out of a deep and light-less well of angst, as it most definitely did with Pierce during the crafting of this epic album (as mentioned before). And boy, does it show. And not just in the afore-mentioned alternately atmospheric and droning and explosive and volcanic sound, but also in the plain-faced lyrics and Pierce's defeated and emotion and world-weary delivery.

In Closing
But while much of the album is indeed driven by emotional upheaval and devastation, there is much beauty and satisfaction to be found in the release of and expression of those emotions. As well, there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel in the form of "Cool Waves"'s weary acceptance of one's loss, it's sweeping, elegant grace, and it's soothing gospel choir vocals.
