Post Supra Vaider High Shoes Indian History The Archite
The fort was the headquarters of presidency government - and is still in modern Madras. The forts also shaped city design, with the "white" side of town laid out around the foot of the fort.
On the whole, it could be said that most of the buildings erected by the East India Company and its employees could be said to represent not only the perceived permanence of British rule but also strong suggestions of British superiority.
Churches were often modelled on the architecture of St Martin in the Fields in Trafalgar Square. The main reason being that the plans for this building were readily available at the time.
The architecture of the British Raj was enduring and represented a means of ensuring that Indians were aware of British power and supremacy. British architecture extended through the magnificent buildings of the three major cities founded by the trading East India Company to the bungalow constructions beloved of the European settlers.
Buildings of the British Presidencies
On the whole, the late 18th century architecture in India was of a baroque classical style, similar to that adopted by Sir Christopher Wren. Examples in Madras were,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Fort St George (1760) and the Banqueting Hall (1802) which had Tuscan columns supporting high pediments and incorporating emblature.
Forts were surrounded by business premises, offices,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], churches,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], gentlemens' clubs and colonial bungalows. Effectively Indian towns were split into two sections - the European and the Indian or "white" and "black". Furthermore, as British power spread across the Indian countryside the smaller towns were sectioned - with the cantonment of troops and the construction of the "civil lines" where the European officers were housed. These constructions were generally separate but adjacent to the native cities.
Some of the most enduring buildings of the Raj were the magnificent palaces built to house the rulers of the Presidencies, the first of which were Wellesley's classic construction in Calcutta and Clive's in Madras. These structures were controversial at the time and resulted in the East India Company recalling both Clive and Wellesley, although the buildings remained.
As British power in India increased the forts were extended. An unauthorized extension of Fort William in Calcutta prompted the attack of the Nawab in 1756 which led on to the battle of Plassey in 1757. The Briitsh forces, led by Clive, were victorious and this victory paved the way for the British rule of India.
The colonial bungalow was originally adapted from designs for the one storey thatched huts which were common in Bengal. This was a politically motivated design for colonial houses which deliberately ignored the design of the habitual Muslim palaces and homes. The bungalows had thick walls and high ceilings which helped to ensure good ventilation and also incorporated a verandah which completely encircled the house for increased shade.
There were three major cities founded by East India Company: Calcutta; Bombay; and Madras. Each of these cities was marked by large forts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which denoted the presence of the British occupying power. Strategically the forts were also necessary for defending British interests.

The early 19th century Doric neo-classic architecture of the Greek revivalists was sometimes blended with classic Roman Palladian styles. Examples of this style include Calcutta Town Hall or Bombay Town Hall.
