The Five Elements
Ayurveda: Yoga's Sister
For those who struggle with addiction and other destructive habits, they are not alone. According to Deepak Chopra in his book Overcoming Addictions, addiction is one of the most widespread challenges facing the world today. From overindulgence in food, to cigarettes, alcohol and substance abuse, the habits share one key element; they are toxic habits, diminishing our wellbeing and failing to nourish and support a healthy way of living.
Better ways to fill our inherent desire for comfort and peace of mind do exist and Ayurveda, the sister science to Yoga, is definitely one of them. A natural approach to health and healing, Ayurveda translates literally as "the science of life" and is the oldest healing system with texts dating back over 5,000 years. This ancient wisdom has given many people struggling with addiction a guide map to transforming their lifestyle and overcoming these harmful habits for good.

In a recent article titled Healing the Root Cause of Addiction with Ayurveda , Yogi Amrit Desai says, “Addictions are antidotes that provide a temporary escape from the stress-producing, conflict-creating reactions you have about what you are doing, where you are going and who you are with. Addiction, which is only an effect, occurs when you continue to use inappropriate external resources to reduce stress and restore a sense of balance, while failing to resolve the cause of the stress hidden in the unconscious.”
One of the most fascinating things highlighted here is the presence of the extremely powerful life force energy, prana [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that is circulating, often suppressed or blocked within us. According to the Art of Living De-addiction clinic in India, "The uniqueness of Ayurveda is that, it is not only helpful in removing the cause of addiction (anxiety) but it helps in cleaning the toxin elements in the body so that there is little scope of discomfort from the withdrawal process. Ayurveda does not say to stop the addiction activity. It says ‘lets lace it up with another more constructive activity’."
By giving insight into the root causes or reasons why we crave certain substances, more often than not, as explained in Dr. Chopra's book Freedom from Addiction, we are simply talking about a lack of awareness of the alternatives available or of the existence of lifestyle programs designed to show us how to transform the way we view the roles of diet, exercise, and quiet time with ourselves, to bring the balance we are looking to these substances to provide.
Ayurveda seeks to achieve and maintain balance by combining applied principles of yoga, meditation, diet, and other detoxifying treatments. One of the principle treatments used by Ayurvedic practitioners is panchakarma, a literal cleansing of the internal tissues, also washing away layers of cellular memory which are also thought to hold our habitual patterns of behavior.
