Teen Weight Loss - What to Do
By: Richard Bragg
Obesity is an epidemic amongst teenagers. As with any other sort of weight loss, there are no easy answers, but there is a lot you can do to help your teen. You have to begin with encouraging both a healthy mindset about weight loss, and help them to integrate habits into their lives that can help their own weight loss goals. Remember, if your teenager is overweight, chances are very good that they have problems with it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], more so than they may be telling you. More than likely though, your teen isn't considering the long term health risks, but moreover, the social hazards and issues associates with that. It is hard enough as an adult to deal with weight loss, let alone as a teenager,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where image is an amplified social issue. First sitting down with your teen and having a deep discussion about their own feelings about their weight may help. Avoid confrontational statements, and leave your own feelings about the matter out of it.
Try to remain as nonjudgmental as you can, instead allowing them to express themselves to you, their thoughts, their concerns, and then offer to help them in any way you can. Another thing to bear in mind is that this is an extremely delicate issue, particularly amongst teenager girls. Eating disorders are on the rise amongst this particular group,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so taking care in how you express your concern is vital. Don't encourage unrealistic and unhealthy image issues- instead, focus on healthy behaviors. Healthy weight. Never refer to things as "fat" and "thin" and the like. Talking to their doctor about realistic goals involving their BMI, age, and other factors can help.
As you do encourage healthier habits, also help your teen to understand that fad dieting is absolutely unhealthy for teenage bodies. Overweight or not, their bodies still yet need more iron, calcium and other vitamins, minerals and nutrients in order to grow in a healthy way. While some quick fixes, pills or diets may be appropriate for an adult body, they won't always be healthiest for the body of a growing teenager's body and can bring about health risks of their own. As with anyone else, a healthy breakfast is essential to weight loss with teenagers.
It may be a good idea to either make sure that your teen is getting up to eat breakfast, or that you have something healthy on hand to be eaten quickly before they leave the house. Though it is often difficult to get teenagers to wake up on time, let alone early, this is a critical first step in developing the eating habits that will last their lifetimes, so consider this a worthwhile investment into the long term health of your teenager.
Getting your teen to be more physically active will play a big factor in their weight loss goals and plans. This does not necessarily mean that your teen needs to be engaged in any sports, but it does mean that walking,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and other low impact physical activity can be a benefit. More importantly, if you're not physically active, it's time to set a better example. Offer walking trips to the mall or shopping center for incentive, perhaps be gym buddies- but be more involved and interested in your child's physical activity and this will be encouraging.
