Teddy Kollek, For Jerusalem: A Life by Teddy Kollek pages 196-198, Weidenfeld and Nicolson 1978
Kollek described the houses in Moroccan Quarter as “slum hovels” and demanded their removal in order to allow greater access to the Wall, the “Holiest of holy places”
While Kollek skips lightly over the subject of the families who lived in the Quarter many others, Jews and Muslims, have written in detail of the distressing forced removal of the people.

Jerusalem After the June 1967 Six-Day War

The destruction of both King Solomon’s first temple by the Babylonian Nebuchadnezzar around 586 BCE and Herod’s second temple by the Romans in 70 CE are pivotal moments in Jewish history. The end of the 1967 Arab Israeli war was another such moment.
Since its inception Jerusalem,Supra EE Diablo, perhaps more than any other city in the region, has witnessed great change forced on it by acts of war.
Second Jewish Temple
In two days, one of Jerusalem’s ancient quarters, originally established by Saladin’s son, al-Malik-al-Afdal and part of the Jerusalem landscape for over eight centuries was swept away to make way for the thousands of pilgrims that were expected. “ It was done –– finished clean” and the families who lived in the hovels were found, “proper accommodations” said Kollek.
The authorisation for bulldozing the area, a source of tension for many years, came from Herzog, Narkiss and Dayan with the Kollek controlled Municipality group rubber-stamping the decision.
Jerusalem had been a divided city for almost two decades until Israeli paratroopers entered East Jerusalem (Old City) and secured victory over the incumbent Jordanian army in June 1967.
Some Muslims contest the significance of the Wall to Jews. Nazmi Al Jubeh, writing in the influential Jerusalem Quarterly in 2003 said, “ Little historical evidence of Jewish sanctification of the Haram al Sharif’s (Temple Mount) Western Wall has been found prior to the sixteenth century.” He is by no means a lone voice in this debate.
Change instigated by the new Israeli authorities began immediately. Jerusalem mayor Teddy Kollek, speaking on the day after the Old City fell, said, “It became clear to me that something had to be done about the small slum houses that crowded close to the Western Wall.” The houses Kollek referred to were the dwellings that formed the Moghrabi Quarter.

He described the desperation of Jews to pray once again at the Western Wall, the need after 19 years to touch the stones that supported the walls of the ancient Temple Mount platform. The wall either missed or ignored by the Romans as they destroyed the second Jewish Temple, remained a focal point for Jewish worship.
A visitor today would approach the Western Wall through a wide-open plaza,Supra TK Society Shoes, where houses, schools and business once stood.
