The popular Saturday night costume contest packed the adjoining rooms at the convention center with a standing room only crowd of more than 500 people. Judges seemed to look for authenticity, costume construction, attention to detail, and creativity when awarding prizes.
Star Trek Events at MegaCon
The three-day MegaCon [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], held March 12-14 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2010 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, offered video gaming, an exhibit hall, and all-things animation. This year, however, included a specific emphasis on Star Wars in preparation for Walt Disney World’s upcoming Star Wars Weekends (May and June 2010), Star Wars Celebration V (August 12-15, 2010), and Star Wars in Concert, all of which will be held this summer in the Orlando area.
In her session, Nichols recounted how she auditioned for the role of Lt. Uhura on the original Star Trek series and how she helped name her character based on a book about Africa that she had been reading at the time. She noted that she read the role of Spock, even though Leonard Nemoy had already been cast, because the communications officer part was still unwritten and unnamed. In answer to a question about which episodes she most enjoyed filming, Nichols said that “Plato’s Children” and “Trouble With Tribbles” were among her favorites.
Other related events included panels on Clone Wars, “Learn how to draw your favorite Star Wars characters’ with artists Jason Sobol, Rhi Owens, and James “Bukshot” Bukauskas, The Wacky World of Star Wars Collecting, and “A Long Time Ago…Star Wars: The Eighties Strike Back” musical singalong.

At the panel, “Celebrating Star Wars [link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” Lucafilm’s head of fan relations, Steve Sansweet showed film clips and talked about the past, present, and future of Star Wars, including the weekly animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the upcoming Star Wars Celebration V. He also previewed Star Wars in Concert, a touring musical show that kicks off its United States performances in May, also in Florida.
Costume Contest at MegaCon
Star Trek fans may have been overshadowed by George Lucas aficionados, but certainly not shut out of MegaCon, which is one of the Southeast’s largest fan conventions, with more than 30,000 fans, vendors, gamers, and guests from all over the world attending each year. Star Trek celebrities provided question-and-answer sessions and autograph signings in the exhibit hall.
Guests from Star Trek included Nichelle Nichols, Brent Spiner, Robert Picardo, Levar Burton, and John De Lancie. In addition to a question-and-answer session with Burton and Spiner moderated by Dino Leto, Nichols drew a large crowd for her own panel discussion.

In addition, Sansweet moderated a well-attended panel called “Everything Star Wars” in which Ray Park (Darth Maul), Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett), Maria de Aragon (Greedo), Dave Barclay (puppeteer for Jabba the Hutt), and Peter Mahew (Chewbacca) answered questions from the audience. Costumed characters Bulloch, de Aragon, and Mahew agreed that sometimes it’s just fitting into the costume that gets actors the job. Park charmed the audience with stories about auditioning with his Scottish accent and the physicality of his role as Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
