Although hardcore animation fans have been leery about Disney developing new stories about their classic characters, seeing it as just another cash grab for the Mouse House. However, the Tinker Bell movies – used to promote the Disney Fairies line of merchandise – have actually been pretty good animated films. While they're not hitting Toy Story 3 levels of animation and scriptwriting, they're genuinely entertaining movies that don't exist purely to sell stuff to kids.
Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue, the latest installment in these flicks, tells a genuinely funny and charming tale of Tink's first meeting with a human but the ending could use a rewrite.
When Tinker Bell (Avatar: The Last Airbender's Mae Whitman) goes on a summer trip to the English countryside, she finds herself trapped in a fairy house built by nine-year-old Lizzy Griffiths (Lauren Mote). Lizzy and Tink eventually make friends but, when Lizzy's naturalist father (Frost/Nixon's Michael Sheen) discovers Tink, he realizes that proving fairies' existence will make his reputation.
Story-wise [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the film has some fun sequences, especially when Lizzy learns to fly and a cat chases a group of fairies along a set of levitating dishes. There are also some genuinely heartfelt moments between Lizzy and Tinker Bell, which are emotional without descending into schmaltz. However, the final act has a very rushed feel: after having a leisurely pace through the first two acts of the film [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the filmmakers rush to finish off the flick which makes Dr. Griffiths' change of heart look unconvincing. Why would he suddenly decide against proving fairies' existence, especially if it would make his career?
Director Bradley Raymond and producer Helen Kalafatic (click the link for an interview) introduce a series of deleted scenes and tell the audience why they were ultimately cut. This includes a sequence known as 'Cat Chase' which shows a hilarious encounter between Tinker Bell and an evil fat tabby. Kalafatic was especially fond of this scene, and admits she was sad that it was cut from the final film.
Disney's Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue Has Genuinely Entertaining, Heartfelt M
While we're nitpicking, there's a historical problem: this film takes place prior to the events in 1953's Peter Pan, set between 1901 and 1910. The automobile was officially patented in 1886 and was still considered a luxury item, since Henry Ford only began his assembly line in 1914. Given that, how would an impoverished naturalist be able to afford a car in the 1890's?

Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue Blu-Ray Extras
To its credit [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Disney keeps raising the bar for direct-to-DVD animated film. The characters' movements are smooth and natural, and the images are nicely rendered. The only point that's less-than-impressive is when Dr. Griffiths is driving his car in the rain; DisneyToon's reach exceeding its grasp in this sequence.
At the last second, rival fairy Vidia (Pamela Adlon) ends up in the trap Dr. Griffiths set for Tink, Lizzy and the other fairies must rescue their friend and prevent the rest of the world from learning that fairies exist.
