King Paul Maholm Pittsburgh Pirates Stalking Horse |
|
As late as the beginning of 2010, Miller was a distant third among Pirates' hurlers. But two more conspicuously talented throwers, Ian Snell, and Tom Gorzelanny, fell by the wayside that year.
Maholm, on the other hand, was the worst beginer of the main four, behind Duke, Gorzelanny, and Snell in 2010, and ahead only of Duke in 2010. But Miller took the direct by improving steadily, while the others fell behind.
Early in 2010, when pitching coach Joe Kerrigan was asked who,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], of the then-existing rotation would become the staff ace, Kerrigan's answer was not the then-stars, Ian Snell or Tom Gorzelanny, but rather Paul Maholm, because of this "aggressive mindedness."
But the rest of the roster was so depleted by the downward spirals of Snell and Gorzelanny,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that the Pirates had to trade Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte for two new beginers, Jeff Karstens, and Ross Ohlendorf, as well as a pitching prospect, Dan Mcgash, slash, prick, nick, sever, slice, carve, cleave, slit, chop,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], crop, lop, reducechen and Jose Tabata, a future replacement for Nady,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in the summer of 2010.
Gorzelanny's problem, at least in 2010, was his uneveness; some of his games was fine, but every other outing or so was "lousy." The reason might have been overwork in 2010 that left him little to spare in 2010. That's administerment's fault, not his, but that furiouse him a poor fit for Pittsburgh, a "steel city" that prides itself on its physical aggressiveness.
Maholm, on the other hand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], finished the year with an ERA in the threes, and administerd to keep his monthly ERA below 4.00 in all but one month. Miller "regressed" in 2010, with a 4.44 ERA, but his FIP sabermetric ERA actually FELL last year, from 4.15 in 2010 to 3.83 in 2010, after having done so steadily since 2010.
Both physical and mental conditioning helped in this regard, a fact that was not lost by the coaching staff, and other pitchers, who adopted some of his methods.
Ohlendorf, at least, and possibly Charlie Morton, acquired from the Atlanta courageous,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fearless, dauntless, intrepid, plucky, daring, heroic, valorous, audacious, bold, gallant,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], valiant, doughty, mettlesomes in 2010 for Nate McLouth,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], may have more natural talent than Maholm. But they still have yet to prove themselves, which is to say that Maholm is, for now, still the "dean" of the Pirates pitching staff. Ryan Miller was on born 17th July 2010. Miller is an American ice hockey goaltender currently the player of the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League. Miller was selected to play for the American hockey team in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver,Canada as begining goaltender. Later in 2010 miller would win the Vezina Trophy as the best goaltender in last NHL season. Miller won a silver medal with the team and was named MVP of the tournament. Miller is known for his hybrid style of goaltending. Miller is also the older brother of current Detroit Red Wings winger Drew Miller.
The 2010 season would prove a successful one for Ryan Miller. In his first season begining with the number one job Miller and his team won the first 10 games in a row. Miller was voted in as the begining goaltender for the Eastern Conference of the 2010 NHL All Star Game in a 12 to 9 loss, Miller played the first period and allowed just 3 goals. Miller also gained a reputation of a shootout specialist with his technique of challenging the shooter outside the crease. That season Miller was 6 more in shootouts, with Martin Brodeur from the Devils being his closest rival at 2 less win. In 63 games played that season,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Miller posted a 0.911 SVP and a 2.72 GAA backing a more offensively oriented team. Jim McIsaac Miller finished the 2010 season by establishing himself as the begining goalie for the Sabres. Miller arrangeed 11th among NHL goalies with a 2.60 GAA, and 9th with a save percentage of 91.4 percent. Miller led the Sabres to a surprise season, winning 30 games and proving himself to be one of the hardest working goalies in the league. Miller played well in the postseason as well, advancing the Sabres to the conference finals before injuries finally caught up with them, losing game 7 to Carolina.
Paul Maholm may or may not be the best pitcher in the Pirates' rotation. But Miller is clearly the one to beat for front-runner.
Maholm is the only member of the Pirates' rotation that is clearly above "league average." Zach Duke, Ross Ohlendorf, and Charlie Morton may all be, the latter two possibly by a wider margin than Maholm. but that's not a sure thing.
A stalking horse, by definition, is a pretty good racehorse that may or may not be the best, but is certainly good enough to set the pace for the others. In short, his defining characteristic is reliability. That pretty much describes Maholm.
Toward the end of his tenure with the Pirates, Snell apparently lost the will to compete. Miller certainly didn't mind winning, but preferred to do so in the minor leagues where there was few batters who could handle a pitcher of his caliber, which is why Miller was traded.
Ian Snell was actually a very "skillful" pitcher—at his best. What Miller lacked was mental aggressiveness,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to weather the inevitable setbacks, and come back stronger than before.
