The upcoming musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is scheduled to open Feb. 18, 2010, at the Hilton Theatre in New York, and will feature the music and lyrics of U2’s Bono and the Edge. The production is being directed by Julie Taymor. She is best known for her roles as director of the successful Broadway musical The Lion King, and the film Across the Universe.
According to the production’s website, “The musical follows the story of teenager Peter Parker [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down, literally, when he’s bitten by a genetically altered spider and wakes up the next morning clinging to his bedroom ceiling.”

Early this year, it was announced that the Nederlander Organization had acquired the rights to produce a musical version of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. According to an article, “Nederlander Hopeful Thriller Legal Issues Will be Resolved,” posted on Broadwayworld.com on Jan. 29, “Thriller the Musical will feature the music and lyrics of the King of Pop and include songs from the world’s all-time best selling album, Thriller and the seven time Multi-Platinum selling album, Off the Wall.
According to a June 8, 2009, Berkeley Repertory Theater press release, “American Idiot follows working-class characters from the suburbs to the city to the Middle East, as they seek redemption in a world filled with frustration – an exhilarating journey borne along by Green Day’s electrifying songs.” The show is highly anticipated and is expected to eventually transition to Broadway.
With iconic musicians such as Green Day, Michael Jackson, and U2 lending their music to Broadway, it is clear that the theater world has embraced popular rock music. Like their theatrical rock predecessors, the artists prove that their music can be celebrated and respected by mainstream cultural audiences world wide.
Many rock musicians have tried their hands at the theater. Rock operas such as The Who’s Tommy and Quadrophenia pioneered the image of rock as a theatrical artistic expression. Newer musicals such as Spring Awakening, Hair, and Rock of Ages have recently proven that rock has found a permanent home on Broadway.
Released in 2004, Green Day’s multi-platinum American Idiot won Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album and Record of the Year. Mayer’s production, Spring Awakening, earned eight Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Director.

Rockers Green Day have partnered with Spring Awakening director Michael Mayer to debut the group’s American Idiot as a musical. The show of the same name will premiere on Sept. 4 at California’s Berkeley Repertory Theater, and will run through Oct. 11. It is said to include each song from the album, as well as tracks from Green Day’s 21st Century Breakdown.
Although plagued by legal troubles thus far, the musical production will be based on the Thriller video, which spoofs horror films. Jackson was expected to assist in creating the musical before his unexpected death on Thursday, June 25, 2009.
