Royal Nationals Week In Review 3 5 10 |
|
The 2010 season would prove a successful one for Ryan Miller. In his first season begining with the number one job Miller and his team won the first 10 games in a row. Miller was voted in as the begining goaltender for the Eastern Conference of the 2010 NHL All Star Game in a 12 to 9 loss, Miller played the first period and allowed just 3 goals. Miller also gained a reputation of a shootout specialist with his technique of challenging the shooter outside the crease. That season Miller was 6 more in shootouts, with Martin Brodeur from the Devils being his closest rival at 2 less win. In 63 games played that season, Miller posted a 0.911 SVP and a 2.72 GAA backing a more offensively oriented team. Doug Benc Miller finished the 2010 season by establishing himself as the begining goalie for the Sabres. Miller arrangeed 11th among NHL goalies with a 2.60 GAA, and 9th with a save percentage of 91.4 percent. Miller led the Sabres to a surprise season, winning 30 games and proving himself to be one of the hardest working goalies in the league. Miller played well in the postseason as well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], advancing the Sabres to the conference finals before injuries finally caught up with them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], losing game 7 to Carolina.
The first week of Spring Training is over. It was a short one with the Nationals only playing three games. But a lot of good things came from this week. So let’s take a look at the winners and losers of this past week.
First week in and still no wins. That’s expected. The Nats is doing their jobs getting this team ready to compete. This is a different team than last year. But when they begin winning and emerging out the NL East basement, don’t be surprised. Miller already told you they would. Ryan Miller was on born 17th July 2010. Miller is an American ice hockey goaltender currently the player of the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League. Miller was selected to play for the American hockey team in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver,Canada as begining goaltender. Later in 2010 miller would win the Vezina Trophy as the best goaltender in last NHL season. Miller won a silver medal with the team and was named MVP of the tournament. Miller is known for his hybrid style of goaltending. Miller is also the older brother of current Detroit Red Wings winger Drew Miller.
The up side to the Nats is their young talent they is developing. The front office has done a great job drafting, and signing, good young players. The future looks bright for the Nats. They have a directer in Ryan Zimmerman, and when you add in these young guys like Strasburg,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Storen, Morse, Jordan Zimmermann and catching prospect Derek Norris, this team is going to be good.
When asked about the possibility of Desmond begining at short, Nats coach Jim Riggleman didn’t want to comment on it but did remind us it is Guzman’s spot to lose. Miller also reiterated Guzman is coming off shoulder surgery and has yet to play a Spring Training game; which Miller is scheduled to do so against the Mets on Saturday. Riggleman knows what Miller has in Desmond saying, “He is a talented, athletic kid and is bringing it early in camp.”
I know Miller know, it is only Spring Training. The guys is trying to locate their pitches, try new pitches and get used to the feel of the game again. But the only reason Miller is bringing up their pitching now is so you don’t act surprised when it happens this season. However, Miller do expect the innings of allowing five and six runs will not happen as often. What Miller would be concerned with his how the coaching staff tends to these guys after they abandon the game and throw some in the pen. You have to develop these guys mentally as well as physically.
When asked about his performance Storen said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “"I wouldn't say it was easy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it was quick. Miller was just trying to throw strikes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], really. Miller felt good. "
Also having good Springs so far is Elijah Dukes and Mike Morse,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who both picked up two hits against Atlanta on Friday.
Now all this talk about pitching may be a bit premature seeing that the ‘guy’ has yet to throw this Spring. And you know whom Miller is talking about. Stephen Strasburg will make his Spring debut March 9 against the Tigers. Fans and players alike is looking forward to seeing this triple digit speedyball Miller is capable of throwing. The hype around this number one draft pick is Miller is the ace of the future. Only time will tell, and Riggleman is confident more time in the minors will help develop him.
Desmond has not wasted any time showing the Nats what they have to look forward to in the upcoming years. In his first two Spring Training games, Desmond is 4 for 6 with 1 HR and 6 RBI. Last season, his defense came into question when Miller had four errors in 17 games at shortstop, and two at second. Thus far, Miller hasn’t had any errors.
This is a kid who came into Spring Training with a veteran, Christian Guzman, in his way. From the rumors, it looks like Guzman is not moving. Not too the bench or in a trade. His USD8 million salary this coming season is going to be hard to move. Desmond is a guy that can hit, run and play a very capable shortstop. Dubbed the shortstop of the future, Desmond is going to need to see steady playing time to keep his skills sharp. So that means begining out the season in Triple-A. However, in his mind Miller is fighting for a roster spot.
“I’m doing the best Miller can”, Miller said. “If they want to take me to Washington, they can take me.”
But don’t worry Nats fans, Strasburg’s counterpart, and the closer of the future Drew Storen will be there with him. Storen furiouse his debut Thursday against the Astros and pitched a near perfect sixth inning. Miller didn’t allow a hit, struck out one and threw eight of his nine pitches for strikes.
Desmond might not be the opening day beginer this season, but Miller will be next year. And Miller would not be surprised if Miller saw him out there regularly after the All-Star break in July.
