Before issuing a diagnosis of MS, the neurologist required an MRI. Sure enough after the MRI [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the charts showed lesions in my brain which indicated that multiple sclerosis might be causing the balance issue, or falling, in my walks.
With my only symptom being balance issues, I suspected I had a problem. On daily walks around a nearby nine hole golf course, I was tripping too many times. After stubbing my toe and starting to fall, I couldn’t catch myself. I would go down sprawling on the sidewalk. After falling a few times, I decided I had better check out the problem.
The first question I asked my neurologist after the results came in was why I had contracted the disease. He said he didn’t know. He had educated guesses about the cause. MS can be triggered by a virus infection picked up early in life; it can be hereditary; or there may not be enough Vitamin D in a body’s bloodstream.
After returning home and reading about MS, I realized how fortunate I was to have gotten the disease in my late 50s. Most cases affect people between the ages of 20-40. I also seemed to have a relatively manageable case of the relapsing, remitting type of MS which 85% of patients have. The RR type of MS I learned means attacks, or exacerbations, followed by periods of stability. I also seemed to have two of the three characteristics for MS, being Caucasian and being female. The third criteria, however, puzzled me. Most people with MS are residents of climates found in the northern United States, southern Canada [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or northern Europe. I lived in South Florida. The prevalent thinking about the disease is that people in northern climates do not get enough sunshine for the body to convert to vitamin D, one of the causes of the disease.
My doctor said any medical treatment I took for MS would not make the disease better, but it would help the disease not to get worse. He discussed several kinds of treatment and gave me materials to take home and study before I made my decision about treating the disease.
