Rick Ray wrote,Air Yeezy Shoes, directed and filmed 10 Questions for the Dala Lama, a beautiful documentary about a unique culture and the man who epitomizes Tibet's struggles for survival. Despite the destruction of Tibet, the 1,Ato Matsumoto,200,000 people who have been killed, and the cultural genocide China has inflicted on his people, the Dalai Lama still believes in forgiveness and non-violence. For the past forty years, he has been living in exile at the base of the Himalayas in India. Part of his time is given to comforting refugees and maintaining cultural traditions, other time is given to receiving world visitors. Getting to know a part of this man some call the living reincarnation of the Buddha through Ray's film, one meets a man who smiles and laughs easily, is very humble, and expresses much with few words.
The film gives a brief background of Tibet's struggle with and eventual overthrow by the Chinese. Originally, the Dalai Lama was hopeful that his relationship with Mao would prove productive for his people. Mao deliberately led him to believe that his people would be respected; but during one meeting, Mao leaned over and said that "All religion is poison," and the Dalai Lama knew that his people would be in for many troubles. He was able to escape from China and was offered refuge in India. He had no response from other countries to whom he appealed, including the United States. China completely overran Tibet, has knocked down and destroyed all vestiges of Tibetan life, has eradicated her language and allowed the land to be consumed by Chinese immigrants. Monks in particular have been treated brutally.
Through the interview with the Dalai Lama, the viewer is given some understanding of Buddhist philosophy. All things are temporal; it is best not to get too attached to things. Violence is powerful but short-lived; the truth is long-term. One former Chinese prisoner, who was beaten and tortured,Ato Matsumoto Sneakers, gave up on non-violence after years of abuse. But following a meeting with the Dalai Lama, he began to smile again, to forgive again. This transformative power and wisdom is something people from around the world long to understand.
